The Most Underrated Maintenance Task
Gutters are easy to forget. They sit high up, invisible from the ground. But they perform a vital function: directing rainwater away from your building. When they fail, the consequences are expensive.
What Happens When Gutters Clog?
Leaves, moss, and debris accumulate over time.
- Overflow: Water spills over the sides, running down the facade. This causes staining and damages the plaster.
- Foundation Issues: Pooling water at the base of the building can weaken the foundation or flood basements.
- Roof Rot: Standing water in a clogged gutter can rot the fascia boards and roof edge.
- Pests: Damp, decaying leaves are a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes and insects.
The Alpinist Advantage
Cleaning gutters on a 4-story building is terrifying for a homeowner on a ladder. For us, it's a routine Tuesday.
- Access: We can reach any gutter, even over conservatories or sloping ground.
- Safety: We are tied in. We don't fall.
- Inspection: While we clean, we check for loose joints or cracks in the gutter system.
Recommendation
Clean your gutters at least once a year, preferably in late autumn after the leaves have fallen.
